A weekend or holiday in Bruges means revelling in ambience and conviviality, culture and restaurants, wandering or cycling along the canals, and so much more. Hotel Karel de Stoute is ideally situated for sampling everything Bruges has to offer. What's more, you will be staying in a wonderfully restored mansion located in the picturesque and historic city centre, right by the Market Square.
No visit here would be complete without a stroll to the Market Square. The Belfry – a splendid, centuries-old edifice – is the ideal lookout point. With its 83-meter high steeple, 47 chiming bells and an incredibly breath taking view over the city of Bruges and its surroundings, it is Bruges's most magnificent tower. In the centre of the large square, you will find a statue of two local folk heroes, Jan Breydel and Pieter De Coninck, who played a key role in the Flemish resistance against French domination during the Battle of the Golden Spurs. Besides the Belfry, there are also numerous fascinating buildings such as the Provincial Court and the Post Building to admire on the square, around which you will also find a wealth of cafés, restaurants and shops.
The Market Square is characterised by its idiosyncratic buildings with stepped gables, which are also wonderfully illuminated at night. It brims with atmosphere, both during the day and in the evenings.
Did you know that to this day, the Canals continue to flow underground along the square?
